Top 12 Christmas Movies/Specials

If I haven't made it clear, I love Christmas. Best Holiday ever. The one day where you can spread joy and goodwill, while also buying nice gifts for your loved ones, and maybe even yourself. One thing that I must do every year on Christmas is watch bunch of Christmas specials on ABC Family (Soon to be Freeform, unfortunately) So here are my top 12 Christmas movies/specials. Be reminded that this is only opinion based, so don't get all pissy if you see something you don't like, or if you don't see anything that you do. 

12. Elf

I loved watching this movie as a kid. Will Ferell's funny portrayal of Buddy the Elf just makes my day every time I see him. Zooey Deschanel as Jovie is a very fun, cynical character, and it's just so refreshing to see Zooey Deschanel playing "not" the quirky adorkable girl. Aside from them, there's not very much else to this movie. The plot is very generic and the humor that doesn't come from Buddy is a bit too adult for a Christmas movie. But as a whole, It's definitely worth the watch.

11. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Yup, you know this one. The classic zero to hero story of young Rudolph, a reindeer born with a glowing red nose. Because of his ability, the other Reindeer shun him for being Different, In the end, he uses his glowing nose to lead Santa's sleigh through a very foggy night, and he becomes everyone's hero. This might have placed higher on my list, but when you take the Nostalgia goggles off and watch it for what it really is, you get a cheaply made TV special with bland acting, not that creative set designs and very odd animation. But no matter how cheap or poorly animated it is, it's hard to love Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

10. The Polar Express



This movie is good only because of the visuals. The story is pretty basic. A young boy begins to doubt Santa Claus, but in the middle of the night, a train pulls over by the curb and invites the little boy to the North Pole to meet Santa, proving he is real. There's one big plot hole in the story, such as the train is only supposed to take non believers, yet the main boy character is the only character that seems doubtful. But the visuals are nice, I guess.

9. Dr Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas



This movie is by no means good. It's the typical remake of a classic Dr. Seuss story injected with innuendos, pop cultural references, and other things that seems to rape the good Seuss name. But there are some redeeming  qualities. Number one, it's not as bad as The Cat in the Hat. Number two, Jim Carrey is the Grinch. He looks exactly like The Grinch does in the books. Props to the people who did the make up for this. And three, It sticks to the message it creates. Unlike that sellout move The Lorax, which tells you to save the environment and say no to commercialism, yet made commercials for IHOP an Mazda, and turns the Onceler into an Anime fangirl's hipster wet dream, The Grinch sticks to the message it enforces. Christmas is more than just presents and candy, it's something more.


7. Barbie in the Nutcracker



It was either this, or that Nutcracker in 3D movie from 2010, and honey, this is definitely the better Nutcracker. In Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie plays Clara, the protagonist of the film, who receives an antique Nutcracker from her Aunt Drosselmeyer for Christmas. But things turn for the weirdest when her nutcracker comes to life, and she's shrunken down to his size by the evil Rat King. So she ventures off into a fantasy land full of fairies, gingerbread houses and air that smells like Peppermint. For a straight to DVD animated movie from 2001, the animation isn't half bad. The CGI rendering of Barbie and her Nutcracker isn't all weird to look at, it's definitely better than some animation that came out recently (Food Fight) The music from the ballet is put in very well, and the dance sequences are very nice. This one definitely gets my approval.

6. Barbie in a Christmas Carol



What can I say? Barbie makes really good Christmas specials. In this remake of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Barbie plays Eden Starling (E.D. Get it? Eden Starling Ebeneezer Scrooge) The female version of Ebeneezer Scrooge. But instead of being a grouchy old Miser, Eden is a self absorbed songstress who forces the Employees of her Theater to work over Christmas. Just like the original, She's visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, who show her what her life was before, what it it currently, and what it will become if she continues her selfish ways. Despite the typical Barbie tropes (Main character is a young, skinny white girl, and that it has to be marketable in doll form) It definitely succeeds in delivering the message of the original story, which is don't be a jerk on Christmas.

5. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town



This is one of the better Rankin Bass specials. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town tells the origin story of Santa Claus, originally called Kris Kringle by the Elves who raised him. I like this special because it's so creative with the telling of Santa's origin, like why Santa delivers presents, or how he first met Mrs. Claus. Rudolph even makes a cameo, and speaking of Rudolph...

4. Rudolph's Shiny New Year/Rudolph & Frosty's Christmas In July



People usually consider the original Rudolph to be the best Rudolph themed special, but if you ask me, I think the sequels are much better. Yeah, I'm kind of cheating on this one, but these two specials are so good with each other, they're even played back to back on ABC Family's (Soon to be Freeform for some reason) 25 days of Christmas. These specials are better than the original, in my opinion, because of the world building in it. In the original, you only ever got to see Santa's Castle and the Island of Misfit Toys, and they were kind of cheaply made. In the sequels, you get so much more. The sets are made much better, and it's also far more imaginative. There's a desert of time, a circus by the beach, and different islands of different time periods. Another thing to note is that the animation is done much better. It's more pleasing to look at, compared to the original, which was at best "tolerable".

3. Rise Of The Guardians



This movie, in my opinion, is the most underrated animated movie ever. It didn't do well at the Box Office and it only got moderate reviews, and that's so unfair. It's such a good movie, it doesn't deserve all this "Meh" It should be up there with Shrek or How to Train Your Dragon. But I guess you can't win them all, I guess. This will however, become a cult classic in the future, like Return To Oz. I really like the film's take on the different holiday characters, like The Tooth Fairy, who this time, is a half human half bird half fairy creature. The Easter Bunny, instead of being the cuddly white rabbit carrying a basket full of Easter eggs and wearing a pink bow on his neck, is this time a a badass warrior armed with boomerangs and has an Australian accent. Jack Frost, instead of being the sneaky trickster wearing pointy shoes, is now a peter pan/boy band heartthrob hybrid with powerful ice powers. And they even turned Santa Claus into a big, Russian swordsman. That's how much creativity went into this movie. Definitely give it a watch.

2. Frozen



Okay, I know what you're thinking "Frozen's not a holiday movie, you jerk!" Well, are you sure? It did come out on the holiday season. It has snow and Ice, and one of it's main characters is a lovable snowman, so yeah. It's a holiday movie. If Winter Wonderland and Baby It's Cold Outside can be played on the radio on Christmas time despite not having anything to do with Christmas, then Frozen counts as a Christmas film too. What can there be said about it that hasn't already been said? It's a brand new Disney classic, it dethroned Toy Story 3 as the highest grossing animated film of all time, and it introduced us to Elsa, an ice princess who is the only Disney Princess to ever become Queen. and it also introduced us to Let It Go, a song so powerful, it permanently burned itself onto the minds of everyone forever.

1. Muppet's A Christmas Carol



We all know the classic story of The Christmas Carol, but you know one thing that will spice it up? Muppets, of course! Any other version of The Christmas Carol is fine (Except the Jim Carrey one, which was creepy and unpleasant to look at), but my favorite version of the story is always The Muppets Christmas Carol. Like all Muppets productions, it's always fun to see the different Muppets play different characters. For that, this takes top place on my list.

Character fight, Holiday Edition:Frosty Vs Olaf

Welcome to Character Fight. Christmas edition! Character Fight is when I pit two characters against each other and see who's better. In this edition, The two characters I choose come from the Holiday Season. The first to characters I chose for the first Holiday Character Fight are both lovable snowmen, one is classical, and the other is very recent. In this match, it's Frosty the Snowman Versus Olaf!!! I also made new rules. There are only four rounds in the character fight, but if both characters are tied, then they will go into a fifth knockout round that will determine the winner.

ROUND 1: POPULARITY

There was a time where when you think of snowman, you think of Frosty. But in 2013, after Disney released their Uber successful feminist friendly  now highest grossing animated film of all time Frozen, all of that changed. And in 2014, when Frozen Mania began to kick in, and all the merchandises started appearing everywhere, the people could only say one thing. "Hi, I'm Olaf! And I like warm hugs!" You cannot go into a toy store and not see anything with Anna, Elsa and Olaf's faces stamped on it. And that's not only on the holidays, that's all year round! So for round one, I have to give this to Olaf.

ROUND 2: SONG

Frosty The Snowman, is a Fairy Tale they say. He was made of snow, but the children know, how he came to life one day. Frosty has had a very successful career. His song plays on the radio every year, and every year, we all sing it. Frozen has the most memorable songs in any Disney movie. For the First Time In Forever, Love Is An Open Door, Let It Go, but there are two songs I could never really get into in that movie. The Troll song, and Olaf's musical number. While Olaf is a likable character, and the first Disney Sidekick that didn't drive me crazy, I always fast forward his song when I watch the movie. Point goes to Frosty.

ROUND 3: POWERS

Neither Frosty or Olaf have ever really been known for strengths and powers, because both of them are made of snow but they do have some sort of magic. Olaf was brought to life by an over-excited Elsa about to sing Let It Go. And Frosty was brought to life by a magical hat. Both Olaf and Frosty melt in heat, but Elsa is always there for Olaf, and even gives him a magical flurry cloud that keeps him from melting. Frosty on the other hand, always needs the hat on his head to stay alive. And he has no protection from the sun't heat. So this round goes to Olaf.



ROUND 4: ALLIES

This one is gonna be tough. Both these magical Snowmen have amazing friends. Olaf is friends with Anna and Elsa, the two most popular Disney Princesses, like, ever. But Frosty is friends with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus. Anna and Elsa may have a big fan base,but Santa and Rudolph are forever. Point goes to Frosty.



Now here comes the 5th Knockout round that will determine which of these Snowmen are superior.

ROUND 5:  CUTENESS

Both these guys are easy to love and pretty huggable, Olaf is this cute snowman character that came from the imagination of a young Elsa, and Frosty was made up by a group of Children who wanted a friend. While Olaf is very likable, I think Frosty is the cuter one of the two. Olaf looks kind of awkward, and relies more on laughs than cuteness. Frosty however, is just straight up adorable. He has that circle snowman body, and and then he has that button nose and that calm, subdued voice saying "Happy Birthday" is just the cherry on the top. The winner is Frosty!! Love you Olaf, but Frosty will always be a classic.

Top 10 Queens in movies and TV

When you here the word Queen, your mind usually goes to real life Queens, such as Elizabeth I & II. but when you put the word fictional in front of that, you usually think of Evil & Murderous. But I can't blame you. Fictional Queens have a tendency to be evil, especially the Disney ones. But there are some good Queens out there. With the success of Elsa, people are starting to rethink what they originally thought of fictional Queens. You saw me rank the Disney Princesses, I'm going to rank the best movie ant TV queens from one to ten!

10. Ravenna (Snow White and the Huntsman)

This was one of the first Fairy tale movies that wasn't a box office flop. People mostly saw it because of the cast. Thor is the huntsman, That bitch plays Snow White, and of course, Charlize Theron's Evil Queen Ravenna. If the movie was a bit more good, Ravenna would have replaced Disney's version as the Evil Queen. But, because of the weak plot, and that drama with Bitch and the director, the movie was soon forgotten.


9. Regina (Once Upon a Time)

This one is another Snow White Evil Queen variation, but unlike Ravenna, Disney actually owns Once Upon a Time, which means they got alot of inspiration from the Disney Character. But what I like about Regina is that she isn't the stereotypical Narcissist that Ravenna was. She was a three dimensional character. She's not evil because she wants to be fairest of them all, she's evil because she lost her true love, and she blamed Snow White for his death.


8. Marie Antoinette (Marie Antoinette)

I'm not going by the real Marie Antoinette, who may or may not have been a self absorbed whore who molested her son. I'm going by the 2006 movie of the same name starring Kristen Dunst. Here, she's an Austrian princess who is taken from her home to be married to the new King,who may or may not be a Queen. At first, Marie struggles to stay with the program, finding all that Queen stuff pointless. But sooner or later, she begins to indulge herself with all the Luxury items France can offer, becoming the original material girl.


7. Padme Amidala (Star Wars 1-3)

Padme is the only Queen in this list that  was elected by her people. She's more president than Queen, but she's called Queen so she's Queen.


6. The Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland)

This lady has some big issues. She decorates her wears alot of hearts, probably because she doesn't possess that Organ. She has a scary high temper, and a habit of decapitating people, And she is U-ugly!



5. Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)

I actually don't like Cersei, but I will put her on this list. Umm... Instead of talking about what is good about her, I'll talk about why I love to hate her. She's a bitch, she's a slut, She condones her Sociopath son's behavior, and she sleeps with her brother! Slut alert!


4. The Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)

The thrid Evil Queen Character on this list, and most arguably the best. She is the original mean girl. She's beautiful, but cold hearted and obsessed with beauty. When she finds out her stepdaughter Snow White has surpassed her striking looks, she just goes "Kill the bitch!" And when that doesn't work, she turns herself into a peasant lady and poisons snow White. Total Bitch Move.


3. Jadis AKA the White Witch (Narnia series)

Elsa eat your heart out! Jadis is the original Snow Queen. Just looking at her, you get a sense of  beauty, intimidation and grace all at the same time. She has a crown of icicles growing on top her head, a long, white fur coat that can even make PETA jealous, and that ice scepter that is actually a spear that can turn you into stone. And she's quite handy with swords.


2. Galadriel (Lord of the Rings)

She is scary. Just upright scary. For a character that's supposed to be the fairy godmother type to Frodo, she sure does creep the hell out of me. But creepiness aside, Galadriel is actually a good character. she's all good, but can still be tempted by the ring at times.


1. Elsa (Frozen)

All hail,Queen Elsa! One of the Few non-evil Queen characters at Disney! And if you check out the Fairy tale Elsa was from, you'd appreciate how Disney turned an evil character into a misunderstood girl afraid of herself. And if that's not enough, she's also a very good singer, being voiced by Idina Menzel of Wicked fame. Long live good Queens!!!

Character fight #4!!! Elsa vs Jack Frost

Oh, Frozen, the world can't seem to let you go. And Rise of the Guardians, the world forgot you even existed. But no one could forget Jack Frost, that charmer caught all the Fangirs' hearts. But is he a match for the Snow Queen herself, Elsa! Elsa, Beloved by little girls all over the world, and Jack Frost, Loved by Fangirls mostly from America, Japan and wherever Fangirls live. Both are based on Ice and Snow, but Which one is the victor of this Character Fight? Well let's find out.

Success

Frozen is a very successful movie. Successful enough for Disney to greenlight a Sequel, while Rise of the Guardians is Basically DreamWork's The black cauldron. It went against Twilight and Skyfall at the box office and failed horribly. it sent DreamWorks down a dark tunnel of failures after failures. Quite Ironic, Disney's winter movie became their most successful ever, while DreamWork's winter movie failed so hard, DreamWorks scrapped the planned sequel and "Let it go". Point goes to Elsa. 

Co-Stars

I love Anna more than anyone, but when you compare Elsa's Posse to Jack's, there really is no competition. Jack wins. Sure, Elsa has her sister, Anna, along with Olaf, Kristoff and Sven, But Jack hangs out with Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny! That. Is. So. Cool!!! Point goes to Jack.

Backstory

Elsa's Backstory is very tragic. She nearly kills her sister after accidentally blasting her with a face full of Ice, and from then on, Elsa lived in fear of her power. Jack's story is just as tragic, but not very special. He helps his sister cross a frozen lake and accidentally falls through Ice, dying. Wow, this kid must have a weak immune system, because I've polar bear dived before only wearing my underwear. He's rewarded by his actions with Ice powers, Eternal life, blah, blah,blah! Elsa gets it! 

Power 

Jack frost can fly and throw magical Snowballs, so Jack  has very limited power.  Elsa, on the other hand, Makes living snowmen, Ice dresses, Ice castles and eternal Winters. You know what that means...
