Is Disney setting up a shared universe?

Disney has hit a goldmine with their live action versions of Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Jungle book, and It's new retelling of Sleeping Beauty's baddie Maleficent, and with Beauty and the Beast coming out real soon, It's time to ponder on a question these live action Disney movies. Is Disney creating it's own shared universe among it's live action films similarly to what it created for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Beauty and the Beast isn't the last live action revival we're going to be seeing soon. Next year, we're going to get Mulan, and Disney has already greenlit live action versions of Dumbo, Snow White, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Winnie The Pooh, Peter Pan & it's Tinkerbell spinoff, The Sword in the Stone, A Cruella De Vil origin story, and The Lion King, with James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa. With so many live action Disney movies coming out, you can't help but wonder if they all exist in the same live action universe. But what does it all mean, though? Are these characters ever going to meet each other? Will we see Cinderella cameo in Beauty and the Beast. Geographically speaking, both stories do take place in France. And what about The Lion King? Are Baloo and Bagheera going to show up at Simba's birth? Wouldn't it be cool to see Maleficent hash it out with the live action Evil Queen to see who's the fiercest Fairy Tale mistress of darkness? I envision these characters will probably meet each other at some point in the future, but probably in a small scale. Think Rapunzel and Eugene at the beginning of Frozen. As much as we'd love to see live action Disney Princesses interacting with one another, the chances of one big Avengers-esque team up seems very unlikely. But since Disney has already created so many live action renditions of it's classic stories, they might as well have fun with it.

The Good Dinosaur: Eh.

I just saw the good Dinosaur, and my thoughts on it are as followed. Oh, Wait what?, hmmm, Eh. I definitely didn't hate it, but I'm not gonna praise it the same way I praise movies like Frozen or Inside Out. But before I discuss what's wrong with it, let's look at what's good in this movie.

What I really liked about this movie, like most Disney movies, is the art stuff. The way those landscapes are rendered is just amazing, those Dinosaurs, on the other hands, are a different bag of beans, but we'll get to that in a little bit. The relationship between Arlo, The Good Dinosaur, and Spot, the human pet, is okay, I guess. It's done well, but nothing really stands out about it. I also give points to this movie for giving the Velociraptors the feathers they long deserved. Take that, Jurassic World!!

But now to the parts that I didn't like so much. The designs of the Dinosaurs are kinda lame. They're not very good to look at, and they look like gummy dinosaur candy. If the Dinosaurs were more appealing to look at, then maybe I would've liked this movie even better. My other not very favorite thing about it is that for a movie about Dinosaurs, there's not much Dinosaur in it. Yeah, the main characters are mostly Dinosaurs, but only five species of Dinosaurs are present, and the four that show up are like the most generic types of dinosaurs that are used by everyone. I'd have liked to see more Dino diversity in this movie. If Jurassic World did one thing right, it's the cast of Dinos that show up. You got Pachycephalosaurus, Mosasaurus, Baryonix, Dimorphodon and Ankylosaurus. Those are some cool, fresh Dinos that deserve more screen time. And another thing that's not that great about this movie is that it's not particularly about Dinosaurs. You could literally replace the characters with any other animals and the story would still be the same.

My final problem with the movie is the lack of originality. While I was watching the movie, I couldn't stop thinking about Land Before Time. The part in the beginning where the baby dinosaur's legs hatches out of the egg and runs around is literally a recreation of Cera's hatching, and Arlo's dad's death is nowhere as good as Littlefoot's Mother's demise. It doesn't even compare. This movie is literally a scotchtaped rehash of Land Before Time, Ice Age and Finding Nemo. And why did Arlo's dad have to die? It feels completely pointless. Why are you so obsessed with parenticide, Disney?! One of the reasons I love Tangled is because Rapunzel is one of the few Disney characters who still has both parents. But if a certain favorite Dinosaur had appeared in the movie, then I might've actually liked the film. Not gonna name names, but If you've read anything Dinosaur related I've written, then you'd know....

Top 10 Cinderella Stories

What is it about a poor girl losing her shoe at a ball that's intrigued us for so many years? Cinderella is hands down the most popular fairy tale of all time. Sorry, super feminists. You can't change that. Like most fairy tales, I can't remember a time where I didn't know the story.  I have a theory that because we've read these fairy tales for so long, our children our just built with them in their brains before they're even born. Even the kids who didn't grow up with Disney knows the Cinderella fairy tale, and there are a lot of those stories. Almost every country has they're own version, and I'm here to rank the ten best Cinderella variations from books, movies, TV and others.


10. THE GLASS SLIPPER



The Glass Slipper is my least favorite version of the Cinderella Story. It's not bad or anything. It just didn't do anything for me. But one thing I did like about it is Leslie Caron's Cinderella. In this retelling, Cinderella is a very mucky looking servant girl living with her stepmother and two stepsisters who are known as the two most beautiful girls in the village, and it's bad enough that they treat her bad, but the entire village also looks down on her due to her filthy exterior. The only one who treats her nicely is the hermit woman who lives in the forest and the prince himself, making their romance much more believable.

9. YEH-SHEN: A CINDERELLA STORY FROM CHINA



Perhaps the first Cinderella Story EVER! Yeh-Shen tells the story of a girl who is a slave to her stepmother and Stepsister. Her only friend is a talking goldfish who lives in a nearby pond. Yeh-Shen's stepmother, being the cunt she is, catches the fish, kills him and gives Yeh-Shen the bones just for the sake of being an evil stepmother. Afterwards, it's revealed that the fish's bones are magic and give Yeh-Shen a beautiful dress and a pair of golden shoes to wear to a festival that her stepmother has forbidden her from going.

8. THE ROUGH FACED GIRL



This Cinderella Story comes from the Native Americans. A weak willed man has a wife and two stepdaughters who are cruel to his real daughter, like the original. The only difference is that where the original stepsisters make her sleep next to the fireplace, in this one, the stepsisters make her sleep on the fireplace, resulting in her rough skin.

7. INTO THE WOODS



Into the Woods is a musical consisting of the popular Grimm fairy tales. One of them is the Grimm's take on Perrault's classic Cinderella story. This Cinderella is a self aware maiden who's not completely sure she wants to be with the prince.

6. RAGS



Rags is like A Cinderella Story set in New York with a male lead. There's not much male Cinderella stories out there, but this one is a good one. Keke Palmer plays the gender swapped Prince charming to Max Schneider's Cinderella. And Drake Bell plays the Fairy Godmother character.

5. EVER AFTER: A CINDERELLA STORY



All right. Here we go. A Cinderella Story with a Feminist twist. When I first saw Ever After, I did not like it, mostly because I was a kid watching a Cinderella story with no magic, fairy godmother or Pumpkin coach. But now that I'm older, I really appreciate this movie. Instead of taking place in a kingdom far, far away. It takes place in renaissance era France. Drew Barrymore's Danielle still has the prince and the glass slippers, but this time, she is a strong, intelligent Cinderella. And instead of a Fairy Godmother, she has Leonardo Da Vinci.

4. A CINDERELLA STORY




Confession time. I Love A Cinderella Story. I really do. It's one of my favorite movies. I don't know what about it really attracts me, but if it's ever on TV, I will watch it. Hillary Duff is our Cinderella in this movie, and her Prince charming is the star football player. They meet on a chat room and are both attracted with each other because of their desires to go to Princeton.

3. RODGER'S + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA




Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella first began as a TV musical starring Julie Andrews. It was so popular that it spawned two other TV musicals. One starring Lesley Ann Warren in 1965, and one starring Brandi in Whitney Houston's critically acclaimed version in 1997. Finally, in 2013, this TV musical finally made it's home in Broadway, receiving a modern twist, but keeping all that Fairy Tale goodness in tact. In this version, Cinderella and the Prince are not the all perfect cardboard cut outs that they usually are. Cinderella is adventurous and funny, while the prince is kind of a dork who has a lot of girl problems. The Fairy Godmother actually makes sense in this one, in which she is disguised as a crazy beggar woman who has a long friendship with Ella, and only gives her the glass slippers because she was the only one who was generous to her.

2. WALT DISNEY'S CINDERELLA



Ah, the classic Cinderella! The one most of us are familiar with. This version is the one that cemented all those Cinderella tropes into the eye of the public. Blue ballgown, Glass slippers, ugly stepsisters, etc. It's also Disney's best classic fairy tale ever. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty? Pu-lease! Every girl fantasizes about going to a ball in a beautiful ballgown. Not cleaning up after midgets or talking a really long nap. This movie also introduced us to the scariest version of the Wicked Stepmother, named Lady Tremaine. In most versions, she's as cartoony as her daughters. But here, this woman is straight up evil.

1. CINDERELLA (2015)



Disney's recent live action remake of Cinderella is the best in my opinion, because it uses the previous versions of the Cinderella tale as inspiration and incorporates what was good in them into this movie, resulting in almost perfection. One other thing I really liked are the leads. Lily James' Cinderella doesn't know how to fight, but that doesn't make her weak. Her strength comes from within. And Richard Madden's too perfect Prince charming is a Frankenstein of all good qualities a man should have. Cinderella's dress might be blue, but Prince Kit's eyes are even bluer. The costumes and sets are so good it's ridiculous. Instead of CGI-ing it to death like what they did with Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland, the sets really makes you feel that you're in a fairy tale world, and If This movie doesn't win best costume and set design at the Oscars, I will flip every table in Illinois.

As most of you know, I'm a closeted Hannah Montana fan. I pretend to hate it in public, but I secretly love it. And if you think a lot of people hate Hannah Montana, it's really just people who love it and don't want to admit it. Now, I took the time to dig Hannah Montana out of the grave and ask her about the show, and she gave me a lot of information. here are just ten.

In the episode "Yet another side of me" Madonna stand-in tells Hannah she needs to change her image in order to strive. She freaks out about it, and comes up with an edgy "Anti-Hannah" Her friends are against it, and in the end, everybody is shocked by her new image. Sounds a lot like Miley Cyrus' shocking transformation.

Miley's from Tennessee, her dad is Billy Ray Cyrus, and her nickname is "Smiley Miley". Her godmother is Dolly Parton. All those things were used in the show.

3. Several Actresses were considered for Hannah Montana

Some of them are R&B artist JoJo, Future Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen, and Jordan Macoy. But the role went to Miley Cyrus, and thank god it did! Can you imagine Taylor Momsen as Hannah Montana?!

In the show, Jackson is only two years older than Miley, In real life, Jason Earls was in his late twenties when he got the job.

In the episode "Goin' Hollywood", Raven meets a child actress who wears a wig to disguise herself. She later goes to school to try to live a normal life. The creators of the show liked that scenario so much, that they pitched a TV show idea about a teen girl who lives a double life as a Celebrity and a normal girl.

After Moana: What's next for Disney?

So everyone's super exited for Moana, Disney's upcoming Hawaiian Fairy Tale Musical. It's been years since we had a non white Disney Princess, and fans are hyped for this new Polynesian Princess. So disney is finally thinking out of the box with their new feminist princesses (Tangled, Frozen,) and Multi cultural future (Moana). With all this progression, here are some pitch ideas for possible Disney movies.

12 Dancing Princesses

What's better than two Feminist friendly Disney Princesses? Twelve! Disney can tuen the highly sexist 12 Dancing Princesses fairy tale, and turn it into a movie about magic, dancing and female friendships. And, if they do make 12 Princesses, it would be a good opportunity to make a princess of a different shape. 

Swan Lake

Disney was gonna work on a Swan Lake inspired movie back in the 90's, but it was scrapped, and another movie, the Swan Princess, was made, and it was awful. But that doesn't mean Disney can't try again. It took them years to get Tangled into the big screen, and it was a huge success. If they decide to do another Swan Lake it could be to Russia what Frozen is to Norway. And it can also include the classic dances and music from the Ballet. 

Dyesebel

Dyesebel can be a good movie for Disney to make, if they want to continue on their Multi Cultural road. for those who don't know, Dyesebel is a popular Mermaid character in the Philippines. She has human parents, but she was born a mermaid. She later had to live in the sea and live with the Sirena, Filippino equivalent of a mermaid, and Syokoy, Filipino Mermen. Ariel is a very popular Disney Princes, partially because she's a mermaid, and kids love mermaids. SO think what another Mermaid character can do for the Disney Princess line up. Buckets upon buckets of money! that's what!

Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, John Henry & Sally Anne Thunder Anne Whirlwind 

Disney has done all types of movies. Fairy Tale, Children's book, Chinese legends, Greek Mythology, but never Tall Tales. Sure, they made shorts about it, and they have Frontierland at Disneyland, but these characters have never had their own movie! How come,Disney?!

Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China

Now, I know what you're thinking. "Disney already has Cinderella, it doesn't need another one!" True. But the Cinderella story is one of the most famous stories ever. And to here another version of it from another point of view is very intriguing. 

The Princes and the Treasure

It's 2015, Most if not all people are cool with Gays. Why not make a Fairy Tale musical about gay princes. It can be that they have to save a princess, but they hate each other in the beginning, then they become friends, and by the end, they fall in love and end the movie with a magical Fairy Tale kiss. 

After Tomorrowland: What's next?

So Tomorrowland proved a success, with the potential for a sequel, but seeing how Disney's ride based movies have succeeded so far (Pirates, Tomorrowland) What other Disney parks ride & property should be made into a feature film? Here are my picks.

Dinoland USA

This is an obvious pick and is just full of potential. This can be Disney's PG version of Jurassic Park. So the basic in universe back story of Dinoland USA is this. 

"DinoLand U.S.A. originally started as a small highway town where an amateur fossil-hunter found some dinosaur bones in 1947. After contacting some scientist friends, they gathered their money together to purchase the site. Since then, scientist, volunteers and grad students have been living there trying to find answers about dinosaurs. The Dino Institute was founded and opened the site as a "fossil discover park". An old fishing lodge on the property became the Restaurantosaurus. Meanwhile, the Dino Institute discovered how to warp vehicles through time, and thus started doing time tours"

This backstory sounds very Jurassic Park, but there are some things they can do differently. Let's say that Instead of cloning dinosaurs, They either find well preserved Dinosaur inside a solid casing Ala Gravity Falls, or they found a way to time travel, and take Dinosaurs from the past. Or, they could go with the route that Dinosaurs never went extinct, and have been living with man all throughout history. You can have the main characters two kids, and they have a dinosaur Sidekick. Something cute & will sell toys, like a baby triceratops or a baby T rex.

Tomorrowland 2

I already mentioned how much I love Tomorrowland, and I would like to see alot more of that universe. In the sequel, Casey and Frank could possibly go to space. Casey always talked about how much she loved space, it would be fitting to have Casey actually go to space in a sequel. You can even use more rides from Tomorrowland, such as Space Mountain and the Astro Orbiter. And hopefully, they can bring Athena back. 

Adventureland

Adventureland is also a possibility. Disney is already working on a reboot of Indiana Jones, and they could expand the Indiana Jones universe with Adventureland. But if that doesn't work out, they can make their own universe. Pirates of the Caribbean is technically a part of Adventureland. They could just expand the  the pirates Universe into something more. But with movies like John Carter and The Lone Ranger, I don't think that's possible anymore.

The Haunted Mansion

Disney already made a movie for the Haunted Mansion, but that movie sucked, and made everything cool about the ride into tools. But just because one sucky movie ruins it, doesn't mean you can't try again. Haunted Mansion. There is still hope for the Haunted Mansion. Disney can take footnotes from Are you afraid of the dark, and make a horror movie that's both Terrifying, funny & family friendly. 

Frontierland

If Disney chooses to make a movie about the greatest American Tall Tales, It should be set in Frontierland. In fact, I think Disney should take a break from Fairy Tales, and do their own spins on Characters like Paul Bubyan, Sally Ann Thunder Anne Whirlwind and John Henry. 

Well, if you're reading this, Disney,  which I doubt you are, I hope you consider some of these Ideas. 

Tomorrowland Inspires!!!

There are two Wolves that are always fighting. One is darkness and despair, the other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? The one you feed, of course. And after seeing Tomorrowland, I'll make sure to feed the right wolf always! This movie is so good and so inspirational. So, what's the story? A teenage girl finds a pin  that shows her a vision of Tomorrowland, a place where the greatest minds came together and made the world a better place. Unfortunately this said place exists in a different place and time. She get's help from an AI in the form of a child and a shut in inventor to get to Tomorrowland, but when they get there, things not might be as perfect as it seemed, and it's up to her to make things right, and fix the future.

It's good to see a film based on a Disney ride other than Pirates of the Caribbean succeed, because I saw the Haunted Mansion, and it did not please anyone. But unlike the haunted mansion, which relied on cheap gimmicks and a Celebrity main character, this actually taps into what Walt Disney himself envisioned when he created Tomorrowland. Now, before you try to correct me, I know George Clooney is a main character in this movie, but there's a difference between his performance here, and Eddy Murphy's performance in the Haunted Mansion. George Clooney was playing an actual character. Eddy Murphy was basically playing himself. And George Clooney isn't the central character in this movie, It's the teenage girl, who is AWESOME!!! What I like about her is that she captures that hope that humanity has left. I could go on and on and on about why I like this movie, but no. I want you to go see it for yourself. If you like it, great. If not, more power to you. But whatever you feel about it, it will give you some thought on how you can make the future a better place.

One is a kidnapped Princess who likes to paint, and also see the world outside her prison home. The other is a kidnapped Princess who likes to paint, and also see the world outside her prison home...This is gonna be one tough cookie to crack.

The Story

Barbie as Rapunzel

Once upon a time, in a distant kingdom, lived a servant girl named Rapunzel, who worked for Dame Gothel, a powerful Enchantress. But when Gothel finds out Rapunzel had been sneaking off to the nearby kingdom to meet a boy, she turns Rapunzel's bedroom into a high tower with no door. For a while, everything seems hopeless, but with the help of a baby dragon, a talking rabbit, and a mysterious paintbrush that appeared out of nowhere, Rapunzel's dream of freedom might just come true, 

Tangled

Once upon a time, There was a magic flower that gives eternal life and youth. A woman named Gothel used this flower to keep herself young for hundreds of years. But things are shaken up when the magic flower is taken by palace guards and given to the pregnant Queen, who was deathly sick. The flower saves the Queen, and the magic of the flower is passed on to the newborn baby, giving her beautiful, golden hair. Her birthday is celebrated, but that celebration is short lived when the infant princess is kidnapped by Gothel, who named the infant baby Rapunzel. Rapunzel was taken to a high tower, where Gothel continued to use Rapunzel's ever growing hair. But as Rapunzel Grew into a feisty teenager, she wanted to leave her tower even more, and with the help of a handsome rogue, her dreams might come true. 

Animal Companions

Tangled has two very likable Animal sidekicks. One is Rapunzel's pet Chameleon, and the other is a police...horse. But over at the Barbie world, Rapunzel has a talking rabbit and a baby dragon. A baby dragon. A. Baby. Dragon. No police horse can top a baby dragon. Point goes to barbie!

Resembling the original story...

Both these stories stray very far from the original story for obvious reasons. you know, Rapunzel get's knocked up and pops out two babies in the dessert. But while one strays far, the other goes even farther away, and that's the barbie version. I mean, in the Barbie movie, the only thing resembling the original is the tower and the hair, and it's not even that long! the witch has to use a dragon to get to the top of the tower, which isn't even a real tower, it's more of a stretched out bedroom. And while Tangled does drift away from the source material, everything a Rapunzel story should have is there. Doorless tower. Long hair. Witch climbs up hair. guy climbs up hair. Point goes to tangled

Personality

Both these ladies are good hearted, but one is spunky, adventurous, clever, smart, feisty, and the other one is kind of bland...Just like a Barbie doll. Point goes to Tangled.

Wardrobe

In Tangled, Rapunzel's fashion choices always seemed flat. That corset and those sleeve puffs? Uh-uh! Not gonna happen! But with Barbie, you know she's gonna be well dressed, and well dressed she was. Her ending Masquerade ball dress looks like a blend of Disney Rapunzel's dress and Cinderella's Ball gown. Point goes to Barbie.

Love Interest

Flynn Rider Rivals Prince Eric, Aladdin and Hercules as Disney's most handsome character. That's right. He's that good looking. But Barbie's love interest looks like a generic Ken doll...Probably because he is. Point goes to Flynn

Top 10 Queens in movies and TV

When you here the word Queen, your mind usually goes to real life Queens, such as Elizabeth I & II. but when you put the word fictional in front of that, you usually think of Evil & Murderous. But I can't blame you. Fictional Queens have a tendency to be evil, especially the Disney ones. But there are some good Queens out there. With the success of Elsa, people are starting to rethink what they originally thought of fictional Queens. You saw me rank the Disney Princesses, I'm going to rank the best movie ant TV queens from one to ten!

10. Ravenna (Snow White and the Huntsman)

This was one of the first Fairy tale movies that wasn't a box office flop. People mostly saw it because of the cast. Thor is the huntsman, That bitch plays Snow White, and of course, Charlize Theron's Evil Queen Ravenna. If the movie was a bit more good, Ravenna would have replaced Disney's version as the Evil Queen. But, because of the weak plot, and that drama with Bitch and the director, the movie was soon forgotten.


9. Regina (Once Upon a Time)

This one is another Snow White Evil Queen variation, but unlike Ravenna, Disney actually owns Once Upon a Time, which means they got alot of inspiration from the Disney Character. But what I like about Regina is that she isn't the stereotypical Narcissist that Ravenna was. She was a three dimensional character. She's not evil because she wants to be fairest of them all, she's evil because she lost her true love, and she blamed Snow White for his death.


8. Marie Antoinette (Marie Antoinette)

I'm not going by the real Marie Antoinette, who may or may not have been a self absorbed whore who molested her son. I'm going by the 2006 movie of the same name starring Kristen Dunst. Here, she's an Austrian princess who is taken from her home to be married to the new King,who may or may not be a Queen. At first, Marie struggles to stay with the program, finding all that Queen stuff pointless. But sooner or later, she begins to indulge herself with all the Luxury items France can offer, becoming the original material girl.


7. Padme Amidala (Star Wars 1-3)

Padme is the only Queen in this list that  was elected by her people. She's more president than Queen, but she's called Queen so she's Queen.


6. The Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland)

This lady has some big issues. She decorates her wears alot of hearts, probably because she doesn't possess that Organ. She has a scary high temper, and a habit of decapitating people, And she is U-ugly!



5. Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)

I actually don't like Cersei, but I will put her on this list. Umm... Instead of talking about what is good about her, I'll talk about why I love to hate her. She's a bitch, she's a slut, She condones her Sociopath son's behavior, and she sleeps with her brother! Slut alert!


4. The Evil Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)

The thrid Evil Queen Character on this list, and most arguably the best. She is the original mean girl. She's beautiful, but cold hearted and obsessed with beauty. When she finds out her stepdaughter Snow White has surpassed her striking looks, she just goes "Kill the bitch!" And when that doesn't work, she turns herself into a peasant lady and poisons snow White. Total Bitch Move.


3. Jadis AKA the White Witch (Narnia series)

Elsa eat your heart out! Jadis is the original Snow Queen. Just looking at her, you get a sense of  beauty, intimidation and grace all at the same time. She has a crown of icicles growing on top her head, a long, white fur coat that can even make PETA jealous, and that ice scepter that is actually a spear that can turn you into stone. And she's quite handy with swords.


2. Galadriel (Lord of the Rings)

She is scary. Just upright scary. For a character that's supposed to be the fairy godmother type to Frodo, she sure does creep the hell out of me. But creepiness aside, Galadriel is actually a good character. she's all good, but can still be tempted by the ring at times.

All hail,Queen Elsa! One of the Few non-evil Queen characters at Disney! And if you check out the Fairy tale Elsa was from, you'd appreciate how Disney turned an evil character into a misunderstood girl afraid of herself. And if that's not enough, she's also a very good singer, being voiced by Idina Menzel of Wicked fame. Long live good Queens!!!
